East End Studio & Gallery, Marshall, Michigan, and Flow Art Space, Saint Paul, Minnesota each announced this week that works by silversmith Joan North, Stevens Point, have been juried into their national exhibits. The Michigan Gallery show, “For The Birds, ” chose her “Icarus” necklace which appears bird-like with an obsession for the sun, made from sterling, scenic jasper and pearls. The show runs from Oct. 13 to Nov 1. Flow Art Space selected North’s entry along with 8 other artists from across the country for their “Celebrate, Contemplate” show Nov 30 to Dec 17. “Tannenbaum” necklace celebrates a traditional Christmas tree, but also suggests the emotional complexity of the holiday. Fabricated with sterling fragments from the past (like the holiday itself unearths), it is edgy with corners and lines everywhere but also soft and sweet with the misty Chrysoprase bits of color.
